Blooming through the snow: Guangzhou's flower fair brings spring to Beijing

South | Updated: 2026-03-05

At first glance, you might think this scene belongs to southern China: brightkumquat trees, orchids in full bloom, and a Lingnan-style archway glowing in red. It looks like Guangzhou, China's famous "Flower City." But then you notice something unexpected: it's snowing. People are wrapped in heavy winter coats, and snowflakesdrift across ancient rooftops. This is not the subtropical south.

This is Beijing. On March 4, 2026, inside Beihai Park, Guangzhou's legendary flower fair traveled more than 2,000 kilometers north, bringing a piece of southern spring to the capital.

Because of the snowfall, many of the subtropical flowers from Guangdong displayed outdoors were carefully covered with protective plastic sheets to shield them from the cold.

And yet, despite the freezing weather, people kept coming. Visitors lined up patiently, waiting to step indoors where the blossoms bloomed freely.

Inside, amaryllis, phalaenopsis orchids, kumquat trees and tropical plants radiated color and vitality. Red banners carried blessings such as "May wealth flow in" and "May you meet joy wherever you look," filling the space with warmth and positive energy.

"If it weren't for these beautiful flowers, we probably wouldn't have come out in the snow," one Beijing resident said after waiting in a long queue. "But once we came in and saw them, it felt totally worth it."

Another visitor, nearly 80 years old, smiled proudly. "I always chase flowers," she said. "Wherever there are flowers, I go."

For many residents, this was more than just an exhibition. One woman shared that she had read essays about Guangzhou as a child and had always imagined the distant "Flower City." She never had the chance to visit. "It's too far," she said. "But today, even in the snow, I came."

In Chinese culture, flowers symbolize renewal, optimism and life itself. They are not fragile decorations, but expressions of hope, the belief that beauty and energy can flourish even in the harshest conditions.

Snow continued to fall outside. Indoors, spring unfolded. Sometimes, all it takes is one bloom to lift your mood.
