The Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2025 opened on December 7, in Nansha, Guangzhou, under the theme "Industry-Research Integration Drives Smart Innovation in the GBA."
During the main forum, Turing Award laureate John Hopcroft, a professor at Cornell University and a foreign academician of CAS, shared insights on AI development, risk regulation, and the differences in talent cultivation between China and the United States. He emphasized that every new technology has its advantages and disadvantages.
In an interview, he responded to the journalist's question about whether students should be allowed to use AI to complete their homework and essays. He answered that AI can produce the essay, but it cannot replace the learning process that the assignment is meant to teach, which is the most important soft skill for young students.
