The island also retains numerous elements of foreign architecture, enterprises, and churches, attracting a large number of foreigners, compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, as well as visitors from across the country to travel and shop here.
The former Soviet Consulate at No. 68, Shamian Street, is known as the Western Red Building of Shamian.
In the 20th century, Shamian used to be a hub for consulates from various countries in Guangzhou. More than 10 countries established consulates here, along with 9 foreign banks and over 40 foreign companies operating in the area. Currently, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Guangzhou is still located on the island.
Shamian-Xidi was rated as a 3A tourist attraction in 2021.
Shamian is home to 16 foreign-funded enterprises as well as enterprises from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, including Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings, a Fortune Global 500 company, attracting many international talents to work and live here.
In the future, Shamian will focus on building an international urban reception hall. Taking the construction of a talent leisure island as an opportunity, it will further optimize the Chinese-English signage system in the neighborhood, improve foreign-related supporting facilities, and enhance foreign-related service management capabilities. This effort aims to improve the international business environment, innovation and entrepreneurship environment, and humanistic living environment, thereby promoting the high-quality opening-up of Liwan District.
