Guangzhou's new "cheat code" for mountains: Hike without leg pain

South | Updated: 2026-03-25

The traditional challenge of climbing mountain peaks is getting a futuristic makeover in Guangzhou. In a recent move that has captured the attention of "lazy travelers" and tech enthusiasts, Guangzhou's Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area has introduced a new wearable exoskeleton robot system designed to create a truly effortless hiking experience.

This exoskeleton robot can precisely detect the user's movement intentions and match their gait patterns in real-time. By providing upward lift through its mechanical structure, the device significantly reduces the burden on lower limbs, boosting leg support and reducing physical exertion. Whether navigating steep stone steps or long uphill treks, the technology allows visitors—especially those prone to fatigue—to reach the highest point of Baiyun Mountain, Moxing Ridge(摩星岭), with minimal fatigue.

There are plenty of other ways to enjoy an "effortless" hike up Baiyun Mountain. One of the most popular options is taking the mountain escalator to Moxing Ridge for a stunning orange sunset. Located just 150 meters from the Moxing Ridge entrance, the escalator whisks visitors to the summit in just 5 minutes. As the escalator slowly ascends toward the clouds against a backdrop of the setting sun, the atmosphere is simply magical.

Visitors can also take autonomous electric vehicles up the mountain. These autonomous intelligent sightseeing cars utilize high-performance advanced drive-by-wire chassis technology, ensuring a smooth and agile ride even on complex road conditions. Additionally, equipped with smart display screens inside, these vehicles are more than just a mode of transport—they also provide on-board information and guidance.

Another highlight is the Baiyun Zip Line. Spanning 1,500 meters and connecting Moxing Ridge to the Huangpodong Reservoir (黄婆洞水库), this high-speed attraction turns an hour-long downhill hike into a breathtaking two-minute glide, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h.

"Effortless hiking" is becoming a defining trend in Guangzhou's tourism. By blending advanced robotics with thoughtful infrastructure, the city is helping make its natural attractions more accessible to all visitors—from young "lazy-style" explorers to elderly visitors.
