The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Nano Innovation Research Institute, co-built by the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology and Guangzhou Development District (GDD), started construction on the world's first nano biosafety center on Feb 27.

An additional 65 new projects have also start construction in GDD, Guangzhou New and High-Tech Development Zone, as well as Guangzhou Knowledge City after online ceremonies were held on Feb 27. These projects, mainly focusing on biosafety and biomedicine, are worth about 133.5 billion yuan ($19.13 billion).

The research institute is designed to be devoted to bolstering the transfer and transformation link on the innovation chain of nanotechnology. While China's basic research on nanotechnology is at the forefront of the world, with up to 210,000 nanotechnology patents, the transformation rate of the technological results is still low.

"GDD has launched a series of 10 incentive policies to boost the development of nanotechnology. We hope to build a world leading transformation base for scientific outcomes in nanotechnology and turn GDD into an innovation source of the development of core nanotechnologies around the world," said Zhao Yuliang, director at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
