The first dual-fuel pure car truck carrier (PCTC) built in the southern Chinese region was delivered for use after a delivery and acceptance ceremony was organized in Guangzhou's Nansha district on Tuesday.

The 7,000-vehicle dual-fuel PCTC, named Emden, was jointly constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International Co. Ltd (GSI) and China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd (CSTC) for Norway's SFL company.

Emden is 200 meters long and has a molded width of 38 meters, according to statement released by GSI on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Emden which is designed to reach a draft of 8.6 meters comes to a speed of 19 knots, equivalent to more than 35 kilometers an hour.

The vessel has a total of 13 decks that can accommodate approximately 7,000 vehicles, including two decks capable of carrying hydrogen fuel vehicles.

The decks for hydrogen fuel vehicles have higher fire protection requirements because of the relatively flammable hydrogen fuel.

Emden is designed with a natural gas (LNG)/fuel dual fuel propulsion system, with a maximum range of 15,000 nautical miles, it said.

Lin Qiuxiong, construction manager of Emden, said engineers and workers from GSI have overcome key core technologies, including thin plate deformation control, hull structure accuracy control, installation and commissioning of roll on equipment, and LNG dual fuel propulsion system during the construction process of the vessel.

Emden is the first 7,000-vehicle dual-fuel PCTC GSI and CSTC built for Norway's SFL company. The other three will also be delivered for use before the end of 2024, a GSI executive said.

With contracts to build 25 PCTCs in hand, GSI has now become the shipbuilder with the second largest construction orders for PCTCs in the world, he said.

Located in Longxue Island at the mouth of the Pearl River, GSI, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp is a Shanghai Stock Exchange-list company. It is also one of the major shipbuilding bases in the country.
