Xinhua | Updated:2019-10-11

The city of Guangzhou in China, together with six other environmentally conscious cities in the world, was awarded for "the most ambitious and impactful projects to tackle the global climate crisis" during the C40 award ceremony in Copenhagen on Thursday.

C40 Cities, or C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, is an emissions reduction advocacy group founded in 2005, connecting more than 90 of the world's greatest cities.

The C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards, held during the 2019 C40 World Mayors Summit here, has seven categories as Guangzhou was announced a category winner for Green Technologies.

Guangzhou won for a massive bus electrification project which converted its entire fleet of 11,220 buses to run solely by means of electricity. To support the bus electrification, 4,000 charging stations were also installed across the city, said in the C40 statement.

Other winners included cities like Seoul, South Korea, for Renewable Energy, Accra, Ghana for Engaged Citizens, and Kolkata, India for Green Mobility.

"The winners of the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards are evidence of the incredible efforts that cities around the world are delivering to address the global climate emergency," said Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chair of C40.
