Many of the 203 public child-care rooms established in Guangzhou last year, under the direction of the Guangzhou Women's Federation, are serving travelers in railway stations and coach terminals during the Spring Festival travel rush period.

An area on the third floor of Guangzhou's South Railway Station, for example, is dedicated to travelers with children. It includes a children activity area and a care room.

The care room is equipped with facilities for breast-feeding and diaper-changing and provides drinking water, a microwave and a refrigerator.

"More than 100 people use the care room every day during the travel rush, an increase of as much as 50 percent when compared to the non-holiday period. We also have a team of professionals who thoroughly disinfect and clean the room," said Liu Hui, deputy stationmaster.

A mother from Shenzhen bound for Jiangxi province is happy with the facilities, saying the child-care room is extremely convenient for her and her child while waiting in the crowded station.

The Guangzhou Volunteer Association of the Women's Federation also provides volunteers to assist mothers in the care rooms during the travel rush. By 2019, over 400 new public rooms like this will be available in Guangzhou, according to Liu Mei, chairwoman of the Guangzhou Women's Federation, who inspected three of the rooms in Guangzhou on Feb 11.
