Manufacturing to make up quarter of GDP by 2019

Guangzhou announced on Oct 23 a scheme to build itself into a demonstration city for implementing the Made in China 2025 strategy, China's first 10-year action plan focusing on promoting manufacturing issued by the State Council in May 2015. 

According to the scheme, Guangzhou's total industrial output value will stand at 2.3 trillion yuan ($350 billion) by 2019, accounting for a quarter of the city's GDP.

The scheme also outlines a total of eight key areas of the manufacturing industry and their goals. These areas include smart equipment and robotics, next generation information technology, biological medicine, new energy vehicles, new materials and producer services.

By the end of 2019, the total output for the smart equipment and robotics industry will reach 100 billion yuan, it is predicted.

The total output for the next generation of information technology industry will reach 700 billion yuan and the city will strive to build a new generation technological research and development system and industrial chain for the display industry.

The biological medicine and healthcare industry will contribute 130 billion yuan to Guangzhou's GDP by 2019, and the city hopes to lure one to three world top 500 pharmaceutical companies and three to five leading domestic pharmaceutical enterprises to set up research and development centers or production bases. 

By 2019, Guangzhou's new materials industry will achieve great success in high-end materials development, with the total output for the industry reaching 360 billion yuan. The city will also promote upgrading to make new materials more green and healthy and strive to build more industrial bases and clusters.
