Citizens in Guangzhou will not have to visit government departments to change or reissue their ID cards or even apply for car number plates after the city rolls out its new internet plus police services.

According to Chen Wenhong, deputy director of Guangzhou exit-entry administration bureau, since early 2014, self-service machines used for applications, making and issuance of exit and entry documents have been put into use across the city. The machines also provide endorsement services for the Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao and have reduced the processing time from three-to-seven days to just three minutes. Currently there are a total of 119 such machines deployed in Guangzhou, benefitting more than 3 million citizens.

Xiaolan, a smart robot which can answer exit and entry questions has also become a highlight of Guangzhou's internet plus police services. The robot uses artificial intelligence and speech recognition technologies and can tell people what documents they need to prepare and lead them to places where they can submit their materials.

Applying for car number plates used to be a cumbersome and time-consuming process, but now in Guangzhou, the process has become much more convenient thanks to an online vehicle management station where citizens can handle 80 percent of automobile-related business.

The household registration department in Guangzhou has also pushed ahead with internet plus government affairs services. For example, citizens used to have to travel back and forth between different departments to complete household registrations, but now they can complete the process in minutes thanks to cloud computing and big data technologies.
