Guangzhou foodies don't have to travel far to have a taste of typical Spanish snacks, tapas, as the city joined in to celebrate World Tapas Day from June 9 to 15.

Spain's tourism agency, Turespana, declared in 2016 the third Thursday every June to be World Tapas Day, which falls on June 15 this year and is celebrated across the globe.

Four famous Guangzhou restaurants – Pinkitchen, Cibeles, Mezond and Flamenco took part in a competition called "Journey to the flavors of Spain" on June 12, preparing a selection of tapas treats such as deep fried baby squid, olives stuffed with peppers, and garlic butter with toasted bread.

The festivities included competitions, tasting sessions and a celebration of Spanish culture.

Tapas is considered typical of Spanish cuisine and served in small restaurants, bars and cafes, often while wiling away the afternoon hours after a short siesta.

The activities were organized by the tourism division of the Consulate-General of Spain in Guangzhou.
