Investment soaring in Guangzhou Airport

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is rapidly establishing itself as one of Asia-Pacific's biggest logistics hub, as investment in the city's recently established Airport Economic Zone takes off.

More than 600 companies have registered in the zone since its creation in late 2016, and a further 100 major projects are currently under negotiation, Nanfang Daily reported on May 9.

The airport has also signed strategic agreements worth a combined 27 billion yuan ($3.9 billion) during this period.

The zone received a major boost recently when Fortune 500 logistics company FedEx registered a new company in Guangzhou and announced it plans to expand its Asia-Pacific hub, which has been based in the city since 2009.

"We will not only introduce new operation concepts to Guangzhou's express delivery industry, but also offer credibility to attract more foreign investment to Guangzhou," said Gan Haibo, senior manager of FedEx.

FedEx's Asia-Pacific hub in Guangzhou is able to sort 35,000 pieces of cargo per hour, and can offer next-day delivery to customers in 20 Asian cities through 154 weekly flights.

Many other well-known businesses including DHL and Chinese e-commerce firm Minsheng have also signed agreements with the airport, while Guangzhou Suijia Logistics has announced it will build a distribution hub in the zone.
