China's first virtual reality (VR) art show, "Mind Cosmos: Sci-Fi VR", held in Guangzhou's FM Art Space in Ersha Island on May 6 gave punters a peek at what life could be like in the future.

VR technologies have emerged in recent years and are now able to simulate real environments or imaginary settings by using matching headsets to generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations.

At the art show, dazzling visual displays created both the hyper-realistic and fantastic thanks to the use of latest technology – such as a vision of what the future might look like in 100 years' time.

A total of 23 young artists showcased their ideas of what future cities and human settlement will look like as well as providing an opportunity to experience weightlessness in a virtual body.

The artists had to master the technology before they could use them, such as learning to code programs as well as constructing 3D models for the VR artwork.

One of the highlighted works - Beijing 2101 designed by Cai Xiaoyu, Xu Lin, Weng Yixuan and Zhan Jie depicts a picture of co-existence between ancient architecture and heavy modern equipment in a depressing and crowded environment.

Yao Dajun, one of the exhibition planners and dean at the Open Media Lab of China Academy of Art said the works are an example of creativity and study to craft art on the periphery of transcendental thinking around the future and environment.

"In the future, we will nurture more artists dedicated to creating a new renaissance and use our wild imaginations to build a boundless world," Yao said.
