Guangzhou science competition inspires youth innovation

"Teenagers can fully experience the joy of devoting themselves to technological innovation," Liu Renhuai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, remarked during the opening ceremony of the 32th Guangzhou Youth Science Creation Competition held in Guangzhou on March 18.

Students amazed both the jury and fellow participants with their novelties, ranging from fall-proof crib to automatic turbine motors, displaying their perspectives of the world and their passion for innovation. The young innovators surprised experts, scholars and visitors on site with both smart and thoughtful ideas.

"Most people's understanding of the greenhouse effect is confined to the excessive emissions of carbon dioxide," said Li Yuanpeng, a participant and student from Guangdong Experimental High School. "As a matter of fact, the deposition of nitrogen is also an important factor."

His entry on nitrogen deposition and artificial phosphorus additives in Dinghu Mountain attracted a huge attention at the contest.

"Li's research carries a lot practical value," praised Zheng Xiancao, doctor currently serving at the Institute of Urban Environment under Chinese Academy of Sciences. Modern agricultural production results in reducing the nitrogen fixing capacity of lands, and adding artificial phosphorus can improve it, according to Zheng.

Li Yuhan, high school student at the Affiliated High School of South China Normal University, displayed his two-year-long project at the competition, multi-functional protective clothing for Hem dialysis.

Li's designs effectively simplify nursing procedures, and alleviate patient suffering while protecting their privacy. His protective clothing has now been adopted by two first-class hospitals. After winning the bronze at the 2016 Dongrun-Yau Science Awards, an academic science competition for talented high school students, earned Li a national utility model patent.

"Teenagers have unlimited potential, and should be encouraged to develop their hobbies instead of burying their head to school work," noted He Yong, principle of Zhi Xin High School, host of the competition.
