Construction of three major projects started after a groundbreaking ceremony was organized in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province, on June 28.

Zhang Shuofu, secretary of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, Wen Guohui, mayor of Guangzhou, and other senior government officials, scholars, and business executives attended the ceremony.

The three projects are the second phase of the Guangzhou International Campus of South China University of Technology (SCUT), as well as the third phase of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and the Nansha-Zhongshan Expressway.

The second phase of the Guangzhou International Campus of SCUT will include 30 buildings with a combined floor area of more than 590,000 square meters. They include a library, a gymnasium, teaching buildings, and dormitories for teachers and students.

Gao Song, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of SCUT, said the Guangzhou International Campus is expected to be built into a world-class international campus, playing an important role in supporting and boosting economic development in Guangzhou and the entire Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the years to come.

"The campus will be built into a hub for gathering international high-level teams, training and nurturing leading talents in the new engineering industry. They will conduct in-depth international cooperation, focusing on frontier scientific research, promoting the transformation of high-end achievements, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship in the future," Gao said.

The campus is being jointly constructed by the Guangdong provincial government, the Ministry of Education, the Guangzhou municipal government, and SCUT. Located in Guangzhou's Panyu district, the project will be completed by the end of 2021.

The third phase of Guangzhou International Airport is expected to strengthen Guangzhou's position as an international aviation hub, while the Nansha-Zhongshan Expressway will accelerate the infrastructural connectivity of the cities in the Greater Bay Area.
