A special sharing session was held on Aug 22 in Guangzhou where a group of university students from Hong Kong shared their impressions on their internship in the southern Chinese metropolis.

The 2019 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Hong Kong Youth Internship Program, an initiative aiming to help university students from Hong Kong seek internships at State-owned enterprises and leading firms, has seen the participation of a total of 471 students from Hong Kong in 2019 who worked for four to six weeks.

At the sharing meeting, representatives of the Hong Kong students shared their internship experiences and sang a Cantonese song together. Many of them lauded the experiences they obtained through their internships and expressed support for the idea of working in Guangzhou and other Greater Bay Area cities after graduation.

Since the launch of this year's internship program, Guangzhou has provided more than 600 positions for Hong Kong students to choose from. Most of which were offered at large state-owned enterprises in Guangzhou and the city's leading enterprises in certain industries.

Since the internship program's inception in 2015, more than 1,500 internship opportunities were offered for Hong Kong university students who also recieved services and guarantees during their stay in the city.

Chin-sam Lee, who was born in 1997 in Hong Kong, is one of the interns and currently studying at Jinan University. He has been in Guangzhou for nearly four years and had just completed a 36-day internship at Guangzhou Metro.

The development of the Greater Bay Area has also provided many employment opportunities for young people from Hong Kong, creating more possibilities for  future development, according to Lee. Prior to this year's internship, Lee had no plans to work in the Chinese mainland. After just over a month, Lee spotted the vast development space in Guangzhou, which has made him think about staying in the Guangdong capital after graduation or working in other mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area.

"Young people should pay attention to the improvement of their own quality and ability," he said. "Through internships and other experiences, you can gain more experience in society and create more room for development in the future."

Another Hong Kong student surnamed Lam just finished her internship at Ehang, a leading Guangzhou-based UAV maker. She noted that the Greater Bay Area has made significant progress in technology, as well as in other aspects. She was deeply impressed with the rapid development of Guangzhou enterprises in the field of drones while interning at Ehang.

"Drones are now able to provide food delivery services and stage commercial performances, which are very interesting," Lam said, adding that she would consider working in the Chinese mainland if there are better choices there than in Hong Kong.
