A new tunnel in Guangzhou opened to traffic on Oct 16, shortening the travel time from Zengcheng district to the city's downtown area to just 30 minutes.

The Fenghuangshan Tunnel, an extension project of the Guangzhou-Huizhou Expressway, starts from Chungang Overpass on the Guangzhou-Heyuan Expressway and ends at Luogang Interchange in the east. It is 14.04 kilometers long and uses the standard two-way six-lane highway design.

According to Guangzhou's transportation department, the tunnel will serve as a link connecting the Guangzhou-Huizhou Expressway and the Guangzhou-Heyuan Expressway. It will alleviate congestion in Guangzhou's center, as well as along the Guangzhou-Shenzhen and Guangzhou-Heyuan expressways, the North Ring Road and the Second North Ring Road.
