A special military medical team consisting of 23 military medical officers from the General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command of the PLA and seven medical personnel from other military units embarked on a peace-keeping mission to Lebanon on May 15.

The medical team is part of China's 17th peacekeeping force sent to the Middle Eastern country, replacing the 16th force.

The 17th peacekeeping force was formed on May 14 in a brigade of the 75th Group Army. The 400-member peacekeeping force is made up of an engineering unit, a construction engineering unit, and a medical team selected from the 75th and 74th group armies and a Guilin joint logistics and support center. During their one-year mission, they will undertake such tasks as mines and explosives clearance, civil engineering, and humanitarian assistance. The peacekeeping force will depart for Lebanon in two separate groups in mid-to-late May.
