People in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou will have a new place to learn the latest science achievements and technologies as the city plans to spend 1.2 billion yuan ($180 million) to build a new science museum.

The Guangzhou Science Museum will be located near Canton Tower, the city's most iconic building, and cover a total construction area of 80,000 square meters. The museum will contain three function areas and several thematic exhibition halls.

Inspiration for the design of the museum comes from the celadon made at the Ge Kiln during the Song Dynasty (420-479), puzzle cubes and traditional Lingnan alleyways.

It will be a first-rate museum in China, a landmark building of the city, an out-of-school classroom for students, a cradle to cultivate innovative talents and a platform to spread science and technological knowledge.

"We need to take our citizens into consideration while building the Guangzhou Science Museum and incorporate the construction of rest area, dining area and parking lot into our working plan," said Zhao Nanxian, a government official in charge of education, science, culture and public health of Guangzhou city. Zhao added that the museum will be a great place for people to visit.
